As the planning stages of our service learning project are quickly coming into focus, it is vital for our group to work efficiently with the multitude of others who are involved with this process. Our group is working with Natalie's Second Chance, WRH Club, as well as Windsor Hall RAs. The coordination that is required to accomplish our task is quickly becoming complicated and complex. Balancing the schedules and preferences of three different groups can quickly become nearly impossible.
Our group has learned that we can centrally base our decisions within our group, but must not become rigid to the point where planning an event becomes impossible. The method that has worked so far includes setting a timetable (such as a 3 day window) then getting preferences from other groups. This allows our group to control when we want to have the event while being outwardly flexible towards other groups. This method also gives the appearance that we are letting each group participate actively and choose when to have the event. While this is not totally inaccurate, we try to keep the options limited so that there is not too much disagreement about the details of the plan.
In all, we feel as though planning this project has not been an easy task, but treating other small groups well and seriously considering their input goes a long way in achieving a desired outcome. While it is too early to tell if the depths of our planning will prove to be effective, it seems as though everyone is willing to cooperate for the sake of the project.
