It is difficult to appreciate things when you take them for granted. Before enrolling into COM 320, I had a lot of experience interacting with people and dealing with difficult situations inside and outside of school. Throughout theses times, I have learned that the best way to get a team to work together is to have them connect on a personal basis. In other words, the more people find out that they have others that have similar interests, the better they will interact with each other.
I considered this just a common rule of thumb that all recognized as a part of everyday life. I now know that it is called "The Symbolic Convergence Theory." I never truly believed that I would be able to apply things I learned in a communications class to real life.
After listening to the other group presentations in class, I was enlightened to find out that all of the theory's we had discussed I could give excellent examples of in my own day to day life. As I was hearing them speak, I thought of specific examples of each one that I had been through or witnessed personally. Although some of them did not match up perfectly how I had remembered them in my head, it made it much easier to understand what the founder's of the theorys were trying to portray when they documented the theories.
These are lessons that I have learned since the class has began, along with many more. It is exciting and refreshing to actually learn something that you can physically and mentally relate to. These applications can be understood by all by merely opening their eyes at anytime throughout their busy or not so busy day.
