Reflection: Using Com 320 as a Discussion in an Interview

I recently went on an interview for a business analyst internship position with OneAmerica. OneAmerica is a conservative life insurance and retirement plan company based out of Indianapolis, Indiana. Despite of the economic downturn, OneAmerica is holding strong and is proving to be a leading innovator. Coming into this interview, I was told that Information Technology interview questions usually were more behavioral based. So as a preparation tool, I prepared for questions such as "Tell me a time when you were in a group and...." I had 2 separate interviews. The first interview was conducted by two Information Technology hiring managers. Although they asked about job experience referencing my resume, most of the time was spent on behavioral questions. Surprisingly, I geared most of my answers to group work questions to my lovely Com 320 small communications group.
In the interview, I was able to describe our Service Learning Project. I was also able to share the difficulties with Carroll had how I did and should have handled the "conflict". In addition, another question that stands out in my head is the question "How do you perceive yourself as a group member?" and "What group role do you usually undertake?" These answers were easily related to my communications small group.  Going over the different group roles a few weeks back really helped me in this interview. All and all, I am really surprised at the connections to my everyday life that I am finding from course material. In addition, as i expressed to the hiring managers that I am learning a great deal about myself from taking this class :)
