Sam Myers: Non-Verbal Communication

Break is quickly coming to an end for my fellow students and myself. As most students desire, I made it a point to venture to a warmer climate for the short week off from school. It has always interested me observing and watching people in public, and I received plenty of this over break.

Non-verbal communication takes place more than verbal communication. I did not realize just how much attention I paid to others non-verbal communication. I discovered over break that an exciting place to do this is on the beaches over break. Although most  younger people this time of year on the beach have an excessive amount of alcoholic influence connected to their actions, it is clear to interpret what they are feeling and expressing to each other from a distance. I observed students playing sports, swimming, and sun tanning. Even when I was far away and could not hear a word that was said by any of them, it was simple to see what their attitudes and emotions were by paying attention to their non-verbal actions. I was able to detect excitement, anger, despair, and so much more by watching hand and head gestures. COM 320 has helped me realize and better understand this method of communication and has already helped me tremendously in the real world.
